   United Arab Emirates Trademark Registration

An application for trademark registration in the UAE can be filed with the Ministry of Economy.  UAE follows Nice Classification for goods and services, however,  pork meat in class 29, alcoholic goods in class 32, and class 33 cannot be registered.    A separate application has to be filed for each class.

Trademark Search

Before applying for a trademark, you might want to conduct a search to find out if there are any identical or similar marks on the Trademark Register. However, it is an optional procedure for filing the trademark application.

      Time frame:  5 – 7 working days

Trademark Application

Once the trademark application is filed, it will be examined by the Examiner with formality checks and substantive examination. If the application is accepted, an approval decision will be issued. The application will then be published in the Official Journal and two local newspapers. Any interested party may oppose the registration of your trademark within 1 month of the publication date. If there is no opposition from any 3rd party, the trademark will be registered. Starting on  27 November 2017, the trademark registration certificate will be issued electronically.

If there is an objection raised  to the trademark application, the applicant may reply in writing within a stipulated time, or else the application shall be deemed abandoned.

Time Frame

The processing time from application to registration may take about 10 months. However, if there is an objection from the trademark office or opposition from anyone else, it may take longer.

Validity of Registration:

A registered trademark is valid for 10 years from the date of application, and it can be renewed every 10 years.
